Rope courses, close encounters with animals, trust fall games, archery, and snow. Does it get any better than that for a vanload of middle school youth?
After a year of fundraising -- bake sales, gift wrapping campaigns, recycling drives, and more -- Torch Club members collected enough money to go to their very first overnight Torch Club Summit. All 12 members of the Torch Club Cabinet, along with Torch Club advisors, attended the three-day event hosted by the Boys & Girls Clubs of Santa Monica at the YMCA Camp Whittle in Big Bear.
Participants engaged in team building, life skills, and leadership activities. They formed lasting friendships and shared ideas with Torch Club members from seven other Boys & Girls Clubs. Staff led discussions covering four core areas of the program: community service, officer’s duties, fundraising, and team building. To wrap up a weekend of constructive fun, each Club performed an original skit and then the Camp threw a mini “Torchella” party for the kids.
Members loved the experience and were eager to share what they had learned with their peers back home. Safe to say, they’re already looking forward to the next Summit!
